Do you know the difference between a race car designed for the track and a car sold to the general public for everyday use? For most brands, the difference is huge. But for the Ferrari 488, the difference is minimal.

The Ferrari 488 Spider is the product of years of development to bring performance to the masses. That's precisely why we wanted to present it to you for our next car story.

The history of the Ferrari 488

Beyond the heritage that Ferrari leaves behind, the name evokes the driving of a vehicle that is foolproof, unchanging, flawless, designed exclusively and without compromise for the track. To bring this quality to the general public for everyday use is the challenge that Ferrari has taken up with the 488.

There are two versions:

  • The hard top (spider): with its convertible hardtop
  • The GTD: with its transparent rear window that allows you to see the engine

The Ferrari 488 will always be the one that overshadows the previous naturally-aspirated generations. Since the introduction of the 308 in 1975, naturally-aspirated engines were used in Ferraris. It was with the arrival of the 488 in 2015 that it was decided to lower the displacement to 3.9L and add a turbocharger.

The 488 reaches 561 lb-ft of torque, which is an impressive improvement over its predecessor, the 458 Italia, which had 400 lb-ft.

The performance of the Ferrari 488

  • 0-100 in 2.9 seconds
  • 0-200 in 7.5 seconds
  • 80-120 in 1.5 seconds

All this with a dual-clutch automatic transmission that shifts gears in the blink of an eye.

Launched in 2015 and named car of the year by several automotive journalists, the 488 is the first turbocharged V8 Ferrari to emerge since the F40. Back then, a turbocharged V8 engine was used exactly as in the 488. So it's a return to the roots that improves the feeling of driving and pleases the purists.

The aerodynamically integrated bodywork spoiler is another example of the engineering gem that is the Ferrari 488. By sticking as close as possible to the technologies used for racing, the 488 is, in my opinion, a masterpiece in every way.

The price of a Ferrari 488

Our 2019 Ferrari 488 Spider was originally worth $420,000. While that's not the entry-level price for a Ferrari, you can expect to pay that much considering that first-time Ferrari buyers usually equip them quite well and won't hesitate to pay for prestigious add-ons.

Ferrari 488s can be found on the used market between 2015 and 2020 for between $280,000 and $400,000.

The acquisition of a Ferrari 488 Spider by Okaze

All over the world, you can recognize a Ferrari by its splendor, the unique sound of its engine, and its flamboyant colour (often red). Our white Ferrari 488 stands out. White accentuates the styling elements and highlights its perfect features.

Acquiring this vehicle means a lot to us. In the summer of 2020, I bought one for a client but when I went to pick it up, I immediately regretted not keeping it for myself.

Recently, I was offered another one that slipped through my fingers. By the time I made up my mind, it was already sold.

A week later, I learned that my friend has just bought a Ferrari. To my surprise, when he sends me the specs, I realize that it's exactly the one I had just missed. I said to myself: "the third time is the charm." I immediately picked up the phone and dusted off my negotiating skills.

It is now in our showroom at Okaze! Huge pride and joy guaranteed every time!
