To help you buy the right used vehicle confidently
Shopping for your first car? Looking for a used car? You're thinking of going to see a car broker, but you don't know where to start? We'll give you 7 questions to ask your car broker to make the right choice.
The first thing you should do when you go to your car broker is to discuss your specific needs and budget.
You probably already have a list of things in mind in terms of number of passengers, storage space, performance and most importantly your budget. Talk it over with your broker and from there, we can show you models that are right for you.
The broker is also there to explain the differences, the advantages or disadvantages of each model depending on your situation.
Once you have narrowed down your options to a few car models, try to get as much information as possible about the vehicles. This is where you ask to see the car's history to find out its condition.
Do you have the service history? Is it possible to see the CARFAX report? Has this car been in an accident?
All these questions are good ones and the answers you get will help you make an informed choice.
When you buy a used car, you need a mechanical inspection. It is always a good idea to consult a recent inspection report to know the condition of the vehicle. The good news is that the dealer will already have this at hand and will be able to explain in detail the condition of the vehicle when it was purchased and its current condition.
Your broker should be able to explain to you what has been repaired and what needs to be done in the next few kilometres.
The inspection gives you the right information about the vehicle and helps you understand the estimated price. This is definitely a step that should not be skipped!
This is where the fun begins! A test drive is essential before buying any car, new or used.
This is when you can test drive and see if it works for you. Start by trying out the multimedia functions while the vehicle is stopped. Then, turn off the radio (to pay attention to the noises) and try it out as if it were your own vehicle, using normal driving techniques. Turn the steering wheel, park, try backing up, hit the brakes, take time to try out the accessories, etc.
also watch out for this type of red flags:
Another important detail to be aware of is the existence of a warranty. Before you buy your car, ask your dealer if there is a warranty. Some newer vehicles may still be under manufacturer's warranty.
If you are interested, the broker may be able to offer an additional guarantee. At this point, it is important to know the price, what is included and for how long.
In addition, under the CPA (Consumer Protection Act), you have a certain legal assurance as a consumer. This law gurantees that the vehicle you purchase from your broker will be of good quality:
If you think you've found that special car and you're ready to take the plunge, one of the last steps is to find out your financing options.
Your broker is there to contact financial institutions and answer all your questions about financing so that you get the best rate.
As with any (large) purchase, ask for a written contract of the transaction and review it to make sure everything makes sense and to have a record.
As you review the contract, feel free to voice any questions or concerns that come to mind. Your broker is there to answer them and remember that the important thing is that you leave with your vehicle confident that you made the right choice.
